Bye, Bye Wimbledon, Hello Holidays!

It's Middle Sunday at Wimbledon - rest day for everyone! In week 1, there were some major upsets, specially the historic Nadal's defeat to 100th ranked player Lukas Rosol in round 2. Except for Venus Williams, who still is competing with her sister Serena in women's doubles, everyone else is back at home or elsewhere enjoying a well-deserved break. Let's find out what our tennis stars have been up to.

Feliciano Lopez

Ladies beware! Beach body alert! Feliciano Lopez left for Ibiza after his defeat in the first round at Wimbledon. The Spaniard is taking some time off to relax and enjoy the warm waters of the Mediterranean Sea.

Caroline Wozniacki

Caroline Wozniacki joined boyfriend Rory McIlroy at the golf Irish Open after her first-round Wimbledon's upset. She tweeted to Danish golfer Thorbjorn Olesen and Denmark's former goal-keeper Peter Schmeichel about the awful weather: "Nice?? Lol .. I got soaked and was so cold and windy out there!Weather wasn't great but the Danish tennis star had a good time with her boyfriend and his family, judging by her lovely smile.

Fernando Verdasco

The Spanish hunk is in Lake Como, Italy. He wrote to his fans on Facebook today: "Look where I woke up today! Lake Como! First time here. Love it". Tonight he is celebrating Spain's victory in the Euro 2012. He left a message on Twitter to share his joy: "Viva Españaaaaaaaaa! My heart is wrapped in the Spanish flag. How beautiful this all is...hope it never ends!"

Samantha Stosur

World Nº 5 is back home, in Gold Coast, Australia. Stosur is taking some time off between Wimbledon and the Olympics to "rest and recharge". "Going home for some R&R then to return for the greatest sporting event on earth", she posted on her Facebook, along with a nice photo next to the strawberries signs at Wimbledon.

Rafael Nadal

Rafa is the major disappointment of 2012 Wimbledon by far. Six months of intense competition, with a historic seventh Roland Garros title just a few weeks ago, was too much for Nadal. The Spanish megastar is back home in Mallorca. Tonight, just like his fellow countryman Fernando Verdasco, he is celebrating Spain's victory in the Euro 2012. Just a few minutes ago, Rafa posted on Facebook that he was feeling "mad" for not going to Kiev, where the final against Italy was held. "Amazing! I don't think none will ever do the same as we did!!! [win three major football cups in a row]. Congratulations Spain!!"
Here's a funny music video Nadal shared yesterday with his fans, featuring uncle Toni Nadal:

Stanislas Wawrinka

The Swiss crashed out of Wimbledon in the second-round. He is back home in Saint-Barthélemy and tweeted a photo of what we guess is Lake Geneva, near Lausanne. A nice place to relax and recharge energies in  time for London 2012 Olympics.

Tennis players cheer for their national teams at Euro 2012

Tennis top stars don't miss a chance of watching the Euro 2012 football matches. Some cheer for their national teams on Facebook and Twitter, and comment every aspect of the game, while others just send support messages to their fellow countryman footballers.

Still at Roland Garros, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic enjoyed some football before their final. The Spanish watched the first games from group B - Germany-Portugal and Denmark-Netherlands - on Saturday, June 9, just a few hours before the French Open final. He posted on Facebook he was watching football to relax just before going to bed.

Novak didn't miss the opening matches of the Euro 2012. There he is watching Russia-Czech Republic on Friday, June 8, and resting after his intense semifinal match against Roger Federer.

German player Andrea Petkovic posted on Facebook a message to her fans saying that she will off course cheer on Germany. "Today [last Friday, June 8] is kick-off for the European Championship, so I and other German Sportswomen and men tried to sing our national anthem and explain what it means to us", said the WTA player. You can watch her support her national team by clicking here

Robin Soderling, as a proud Swedish man, as been following his team very closely. During the matches he posted several messages on his Twitter. He even sent a message to England before the match against Sweden: "How can England be so sure to get 3 points against Sweden when the last 7 matches ended with 5 draws and 2 wins for us? Play first talk after :)" Unfortunately, Sweden lost to England 2-3, and is out of the Euro 2012.

Spanish Fernando Verdasco is following the Euro 2012 with close attention. He is cheering for Spain but has been watching almost every game, judging by his posts on Twitter and Facebook. Less than an hour ago, he said he was on his way home and is looking forward to watch Portugal vs. Holland. Here is one of the photos he posted the day Spain defeated Republic of Ireland 4-0.

Tennis legend Martina Navratilova is happy for her country mates of Czech Republic. "The Czechs are in the quarters at euro 2012 - well done!!!", said Martina on her Twitter this morning. The Czechs qualified yesterday after beating Poland 1-0.

10 Tennis Quickies!

1 A French newspaper looked under the skirt of Maria Sharapova and came up with the most distasteful article ever written about tennis. Is this what French photographers are trying to get in the pits? Martina Hingis doesn't like it either! Respect women's tennis, please!

Nadal out of Madrid, Top players in trouble with blue clay

It was certainly one of the worst matches played by Rafael Nadal on a clay court. This afternoon, Fernando Verdasco claimed his first win in 14 career matches with Rafael Nadal after rallying from 2-5 and a double break in the 3rd set in Madrid to win 63 36 75, reports the ATP Tour.

Awkward misses, failed volleys, and, in sum, what it seemed a terrible adjustment to the blue clay court surface dictated Nadal's elimination in the 1/8 round.

Earlier this week, the world nº 2 criticized the Madrid Open organization and the ATP World Tour for allowing the blue clay surface in the ATP Masters 1000. The "King of Clay" was not happy about it, but other top players like Djokovic and Federer are also having trouble adjusting on this court surface. According to the players, the court is slippery and it bounces differently. On Facebook, tennis fans also dissatisfied with the court surface are calling it the "smurf clay".

After the game, at the press conference, Nadal guaranteed that he will not play in Madrid next year if the court surface continues to be blue clay.

Tennis specialists believe that Nadal's elimination and all the criticism around blue clay will likely make the Madrid's organization change their mind about the surface, and go back to red clay in next year's tournament.

The event is also being disapproved by tennis fans because of the poor television coverage of WTA matches, and problems with the official website (order of play is not updated in time) and online tickets sale. Also, the selection of models to work as ball boys and ball girls is being criticized.

Nadal's defeat opens up the competition for world nº2 position in the ATP ranking. If Federer and Djokovic make it to the final they will hold the first two positions of the ranking and Nole will consolidate is place as the number 1 top player.
